International Nurses Day Celebration – Nursing Education Towards Universal Health
On May 15, 2017, the International Nurses Day 2017 was held at the headquarters of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), focusing on Nursing Education towards Universal Health.
The event was opened with the presentation of James Fitzgerald, Director of PAHO/WHO's Department of Health Systems and Services. Then, Silvia Cassiani, PAHO/WHO's Regional Advisor for Nursing and Allied Health Personnel, presented the results of the study "The situation of nursing education in Latin America and the Caribbean towards universal health", carried out by PAHO/WHO and collaborators, with 246 schools in 25 countries, to evaluate the situation of nursing education (undergraduate programs) in Latin America and the Caribbean in the context of Universal Health.
Some of the other authors of the publication also participated, such as Sabrina Mikael, Lynda Wilson, Laura Moran Peña, Rosa Zarate Grajales, Linda McCreary, Fabiola Castellanos Soriano, among other special guests.
The closing of the International Nurses Day celebration was carried out by Francisco Becerra, PAHO/WHO's Deputy Director. He emphasized the special mystique of nursing and the lessons that he took when interacting with the professionals of that career in the National Institute of Cardiology of Mexico, "learning, listening and seeing the patient better".
