Here's a "Target 7" report on nurses addicted to narcotics (from which about 1,000 a year are lost to drug addiction, and many even steal drugs meant for patients), as reported by Roberta Baskin on Eyewitness News on WLS Channel 7. The report is introduced by Mary Ann Childers, and Tim Weigel is co-anchor.

Roberta noting that nurses are 30-50 times more susceptible to drug addiction than the population as a whole, due to their access to such drugs, and is a penalty punishable by four years in jail and a $30,000 fine yet rarely prosecuted; nine nurses and ex-nurses (some of whose faces are darkened) speak of the lengths they went through to satisfy their habit (among those identified are "Susan," Shanda Edwards, and "Joan"). Drugs to which they become addicted include Demerol which is similar to morphine (and the process of substituting saline solution for Demerol in hospital). Also interviewed are nurse therapist Evelyn Perkins; Paulette Pohlmeyer, mother of a patient who was treated by one nurse addict who used his name to steal a Demerol; Jim Hannon of the Federal Drug Agency; Joseph Levin, Professor at the University of Illinois; and Irene Johnson, admistrator of the Amberwood Healthcare Centre, who spoke about a former nurse Christine Hazlett (sp). Roberta ends by noting that the Illinois Nursing Association is setting up a peer assistance network for those nurse addicts who seek help and to kick the habit, and giving the phone number of the Contact Chicago hotline (with which Target 7 has partnered). She and Tim have an exchange on the issue before the tape cuts out.
