Here's another edition of Today in Chicago with Norman Mark on WMAQ Channel 5, with guest Janice Crebbs, Executive Director of the Chicago Council on the Fine Arts, discussing the state of the arts and culture in Chicago.

Norman opens this edition with notice of a strawberry festival in Florida, the Mason-Dixon Open Badminton Tournament in Baltimore, Norman Bethune's birthday on Saturday the 3rd and Herbert Hoover's 1931 signing of a proclamation making "The Star Spangled Banner" our National Anthem, then mentioning various events in and around Chicago for the weekend, before previewing his guest and signaling for first break.

Norman introduces his guest, by bringing up other times when she showed up on the wrong day and was scheduled during the blizzard, and also her being arrested 11 years before at a protest outside the Hilton, her starting out in government under Mayor Daley heading a program dealing Federal funds to nonprofit agencies, and her educational background as an English major, art historian minor and student of religion, before discussing her pride of the Fine Arts Council's accomplishments in its (at the time) short existence, getting arts into local communities (with Norman bringing up Janice's predecessor Heather Bilandic, the by-now ex-Mayor's wife), and specific areas such as dance (with ballet companies in other cities vs. the Chicago Ballet in terms of prominence, funding, etc.), film (not much opportunity for local filmmakers) and theatre, before Norman signals for another break.

In this segment, a more in-depth discussion on the state of theatre in Chicago, including larger numbers of actors staying in the city, the City Arts program in conjunction with the National Endowment for the Arts, the state of Chicago's museums and how they all need money, a look at "A Survey of Arts and Cultural Activities in Chicago" she'd written in 1977 which cite a figure of 67% of Chicagoans who attend museums, the transition in city government that has left her status up in the air, her plans to set up a business advisory committee to the arts, the morale of Fine Arts staffers, her characterization of the state of art in Chicago as "exciting," with both money and recognition by Chicagoans most needed, the state of music in the city, and references to ChicagoFest and Second City, before Norman signals the coming news update

In the final stretch, topics discussed include Janice's plugging the Fine Arts hotline where a live person speaks face-to-face with interested callers, then going to the subject of visual arts with a piece of legislation passed the prior year called "Percent for Art," with 1% of any new building set aside for artworks (she mentions the first artist covered, Barry Tinsley, working on the Far North Side, and a total of 16 sites covered thus far), the importance of arts in a time of huge potholes, a school system leaving something to be desired and severe cold weather, and how art defines our country, before the discussion ends; Norman then previews Monday's (March 5th) edition with Dr. Noel Nequin of Swedish Covenant Hospital about running, jogging and health.
